Commuters coming to Canary Wharf from Brixton, Clapham, Herne Hill and Camberwell could get a new off-road cycle route if a £66,000 crowd funding campaign is successful.
The team behind Peckham Coal Line are initially looking to connect dormant land between Peckham Rye and Queens Road Peckham and later a cycle link between Clapham Common and Canary Wharf.
The proposal is to link two parts of the national cycle network that would create an almost continuous green route between Brixton and Rotherhithe with the future potential to reach Canary Wharf if a cycle and pedestrian bridge from Sustrans is successful.
The group say in release: “As a more direct, safer and scenic route, the greenway would be away from the roads for almost its entire length providing the opportunity to many, who at the moment are not confident enough to brave the city center streets, or who don’t want to cycle the lengthy, round-about routes currently available.
“The money raised will finance an official feasibility study preparing the way towards the build stage. If the Peckham Coal Line can demonstrate enough public support there is also the chance to be awarded up to £20,000 from the Mayor of London’s High Street Fund.”
The campaign ends on October 31.
