Bankers are set to become ballers for one night only, as the East End’s premier five-a-side football tournament returns for its second year.

The Wharf Cup, set to include 17 five-a-side teams from around Canary Wharf and the City, will take place on Friday October 2, at the new Whitechapel premises of Play On Sports.

Prizes are there to be won for the eventual victors and food and drink is included for each team.

Now in its third year, 2015 will be the second time the tournament is held in association with the Play On Sports brand. The company was based near Canary Wharf for more than 10 years, but has moved premises to Whitechapel after its former home was demolished to make way for residential development.

Managing director Roger Rebello said: “We have two sports halls, along with a restaurant, bar and games such as darts, pool and air hockey.

“It’s like a play area for adults. It’s not just a place where you can come and play sports, you can also meet up with your mates here too.

“Since coming to Whitechapel, we have increased our clientelle and kept a lot of the people who used to come here, but we feel like our home is in Canary Wharf, and we want to move back as soon as we can.”

He expects suitable premises in Canary Wharf to become available in 2017.

“This is the second year we’ve been involved with the tournament after a fantastic one last year,” said Roger, who began as a referee at Play On Sports eight years ago.

“The standard of football was quite good then, and everyone was able to get a beer and a burger afterwards, which they’ll be able to do this time round too.

“The Rugby World Cup is on too, so everyone taking part can watch rugby on the big screen afterwards – what could be better than that?”

The Wharf Cup kicks off at 6pm and spectators are welcome to attend.
