Round up your beverage-boffin pal, the one who’s a sucker for quirky tipples and the larger than life character with a cocktail shaking impression on tap and you’ve got a somewhat unholy trinity.
But this drinking trio will find their church at The Spirited Sermon.
This series of summer events at speakeasy Reverend J Simpson combines indulgence with hands-on masterclasses and a far from serious “sermon” on the history behind the feature drink.
This month, it was the turn of mother's ruin in a collaboration with Gin Mare.
There’s a sense of stepping back a couple of eras as we nestle around a table, surrounded by much-loved, intentionally well-worn pastel decor.
The exquisite sermon sheet is impressiv, complete with Medieval style etchings.
But modern, fresh flavours and combinations can be found in the final page - a five-strong list of cocktails created by the team to harness Gin Mare’s Mediterranean vibe.
The sharp, clean Tom Collins-style Forager’s Fizz topped the style stakes with pretty petals.
The deliciously smooth honeyed notes of G and Bee had our trio sold on Gin Mare - so much so we quizzed the bartender on the exact method before shaking it up in our masterclass.
Sandwiched between the two came the theory - delivered by host Jorge Balbontin and test tubes packed with oil.
It was an entertaining deconstruction of the flavours behind the spirit, whether that meant crunching a juniper berry in our fingertips to scrunching up our faces as we sampled pure rosemary essence.
The bad news? The gin sermon has come to an end.
The good part? You’ll be able to practise exactly what’s preached in Single Barrel Bourbon with Four Roses Bourbon on June 30, The Essence of Agave with Tapatio Tequila, Illegal Mezcal & Derrumbes Michoacan on July 14 and The Pot Stills of Midleton Distillery with Jameson Irish Whiskey on July 28.
Arrival from 6pm, masterclass and cocktail making from 6.30pm-10pm.
Costs £25 plus booking fee and includes three cocktails.
