There’s something special about dressing up for dinner. But at W Hotel, Leicester Square, even the most fashionable footgear comes second place to the pair of stilettos forming part of the tea.

The competition comes in the form of a strikingly elegant cake stand.

Heels with more bling than the cast of Towie are the centrepiece for W Fashion Power Afternoon Tea, launched alongside the exhibition of the same name at the Design Museum.

Though should you arrive a tad dishevelled at the hotel’s quirky restaurant – decked out with angled window seats, printed sofas and baubles – you’ll only be emulating Vivienne Westwood in cake form.

Sticks of crazy candy floss “hair” plonked into tartan-covered chocolate mousse scream of the designer’s eccentricities, classic prints and softer, charitable demeanour. They are truly decadent, rich and luxurious.

The cake finale is worth waiting for, though the sandwiches – salmon and egg mayonnaise – impress.

There are powder soft scones – but really you’re waiting for the arrival of the Lady Gaga “meat cake”.

As a veggie, the bite is surreal but the sweet hunk of marble patterned with graffiti print marzipan is gorgeously creamy and candy-like with an almond tang. It’s Gaga – unique, brash and impossible to ignore.

If your muse is Coco Chanel a delicate Champagne mousse with chocolate pearls is a perfect match. Creamy filling disappears into a puff of sugary goodness melting onto the taste buds with each nibble. The dinky, Champagne-filled atomiser is the highlight – so you can spritz bubbly before, sadly, leaving those shiny shoes behind.

Daily from 2-5pm, until April 26. The tea costs £27.50 or £38.50 packaged with entry to the Design Museum’s Women Fashion Power exhibition.
