Easing us into the evening was the soft fizz of a minty Femme Fatale (£9.20), but the punchy Montego Bay Fix (£9.20), was the stand-out feature – which my dining companion eloquently described as “a boozy explosion”.

When it came to the food I didn’t choose as well as my other half. My starter of citrus-cured var salmon fillet with Cornish crab and avocado mousse (£11.50) was too creamy, although generous on the crustacean front.

Consequently I was forced to ensure the chunky ham hock croquette (£9) across the table was shared very much in my favour.

My Scottish hake with butter sauce (£17) was mouth-watering – delicately cooked fish complemented well by sprouting broccoli and brown shrimp. And while my white chocolate mousse with redcurrant sauce (£7) was perfectly pleasant, another guerilla raid across the table revealed soft banana sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel ice cream (£7) was the best thing served all night.

This a great place to go for typical pub grub done incredibly well.
