But chairman of top Italian roaster, Illycafe, believes the sheer number of coffee drinkers in developing countries is putting pressure on global production.

Andrea Illy told The Independent output would need to raise by up to 50million extra bags during the next decade to keep with the pace – a figure that is more than the entire crop produced by Brazil.

He told the newspaper “Sooner or later, in months or years, we’ll have to make a bold decision about what to do.

“We don’t know where this coffee will come from.”

It is thought the combined pressures of under-supply and changing UK regulations may also mean the price of a morning brew could rocket.
