Marble-clad fine-dinery One Canada Square has got a deal; one hot enough to draw the The Only Way Is Essex cast members to London, apparently.
Better than Basildon and Braintree, Cooler than Colchester. Sexier than Southend. They like their discounts, it would seem .
I am referring to the venue’s After Dark deal. It’s an evening counterpart to its Bottomless Brunches (not an excuse for early-doors trouser perversion).
Head chef Jamie Dobbin and associates are offering two courses and as much white, red, rose, Prosecco or beer as you can swill in a two-hour window (responsibly) for £45, all-in on Saturday nights.
For this level of cooking, it’s hands down the best deal on the Wharf, with or without the possibility of rubbing tables with the likes of Arg and Lauren.
A starter of cauliflower and Jerusalem artichoke soup was a warming bath for slivers of subtle smoked eel on a diving board of toast.
Rose veal schnitzel was a beaten beast barely tamed on the plate crouching underneath a fried duck egg
And lavender creme brulee recalled childhood hours spent making dubious perfume, hands rich with the flower’s scent after stuffing sprigs into jars of water.
But these three were surpassed by a side of Dauphinoise potatoes that was so gloriously overblown it would be almost worth having as a main. No matter the £4 addition to the bill. Order two.
Despite the rampant praise (this really is a place worth spending your hard won sterling in) one note of caution.
My companion’s main was weak for a dish featuring both chilli and garlic. Sadly the Cornish squid and crab were hard done by sauce-wise with the smoked tomato failing to enliven
Never mind though, there are plenty of other things on the menu, a late licence and DJ to enjoy and plenty of potent cocktails (including a deal for post bottomless booze boozing).
With Big Easy also open late on a Saturday, could this be the start of Canary Wharf as a nightspot proper?
The offer is available from 6pm with last orders at 9pm.
