DLR1.JPGShort-term pain will lead to long-term gain for Docklands Light Railway passengers as the network gears up for its Olympic challenge.

The entire DLR will be suspended this weekend as a new signal control system is installed in preparation for next year's Games, while the Bank/Tower Gateway to Canary Wharf section will shut from Christmas Eve until January 2 as 12km of rail is replaced.

Test trains will be in operation on the line, which means normal services will be suspended for both days.

Work on the northbound Blackwall Tunnel has been completed a year ahead of schedule meaning motorists will regain full use of the tunnel from November 11.

The £70million improvements have upgraded lighting, ventilation and safety systems in the 114-year old tunnel to reduce the impact of incidents that lead to hold-ups.

Transport for London has revealed that the signal upgrade, which ran more than 18 months over schedule, cost £721million, compared to the projected figure of £285.3million when the PPP contract was signed in 2002.

The Docklands Light Railway's (DLR's) three-car upgrade has been completed on time and within budget with the launch of three-car trains on the Tower Gateway to Beckton route.

The £325million upgrade also includes longer platforms, improved track and signalling, £13million of improvements to Tower Gateway station and an entire new station at South Quay.

Transport for London has announced the final set of closures required to install a new signalling system and said that this will see an increase in trains at peak times from July.

Upgrade work on the final phases of the London Overground has been announced by Transport for London and Network Rail.

It will see closures on the line between Stratford and Gospel Oak from December 18-24 and Richmond to Stratford from December 27 to January 3.

That's how much the Canary Wharf-based engineering consortium will lose for its failure to complete the installation of new signalling on the line by the end of last year, according to chief executive Dean Finch.

Boris Johnson's key transport aide has slammed Tube Lines over the delayed finish to upgrade work on the Jubilee line.

Kulveer Ranger, who advises the Mayor of London on all transport issues, admitted he was "disappointed" by Tube Lines' failure to meet their December 31 deadline.

A total of £18.2million will be provided to boost passenger capacity on trains serving the route, calming fears it would miss out on the upgrade being carried out on the rest of the network.
