As late workers and midweek drinkers ambled to the DLR late last Wednesday, some spotted a slightly longer train pulling into the platform.

It may not have been in operation, but this was the first sighting of DLR's new three-car trains on the Bank to Lewisham line.

The new South Quay DLR station could be open in the next few weeks.

The Docklands Light Railway has been working on the new station approximately 120m east of the current stop for nearly two years in order to accommodate three-car trains.

Transport for London announced last January that the westbound lane of Marsh Wall would be closed for about 18 months for the construction of a new three-car-friendly station.

DLR passengers have been promised an "immediate effect" on their journeys following the network's extended closure for improvements.

New sections of track at Poplar and Canning Town are to be linked into the existing network, prompting a nine-day closure of stations linking East India to Prince Regent and London City Airport.

The City terminal opened today after a closure of around eight months for maintenance works, but some lines were disrupted this morning by a signal failure at West India Quay.
