Ed Miliband channelled Benjamin Disraeli as he called for "one nation banking" in a speech at Canary Wharf this morning.

The Labour leader said the path the banking industry had taken in recent years would lead to a separation of society "economically, geographically, and socially" and said he would change the rules to create "a fairer society and an economy that pays its way in the world".

The ramifications of last week's Budget will be felt for quite some time to come. The new Government has rightly prioritised reining in the budget deficit.

If the deficit had been left unchecked the financial crisis would have spiralled out of control.

A budget has to balance sooner or later; black holes cannot be financed forever and they cannot be ignored. It's therefore interesting that the Labour-run council chose to overlook the fact that its books contain a £54million gap. Putting that into context, council tax in Tower Hamlets would have to rise by almost 30 per cent a year for the next three years just to plug that gap.

HSBC chief executive Michael Geoghegan has warned of an exodus of bankers from Britain just days before he himself relocates to Hong Kong.

Mr Geoghegan criticised the Government's handling of the economy and attacked the introduction of the bonus tax, which he feels is doing more harm than good.
