Journalists at Wharf-based Thompson Reuters are to vote on strike action after rejecting an "insulting" 1.5 per cent pay offer. They have demanded a seven per cent rise instead, with future increases at least in line with inflation.

The entire country isn't opposed to the public sector strikes. Just those who haven't got jobs at all, those who haven't got any meaningful pensions, those in the private sector who face far more draconian cutbacks on their benefits, those in the small business sector who live with daily insecurity, and, of course, the army of parents valiantly attempting to arrange childcare as the schools shut.

The union, which has already announced two three-day stoppages over an unrelated matter, claim London Underground has reneged on agreements over safety procedures on the line. The RMT intends to ballot on action short of a strike.

Teachers march against cuts

Tower Hamlets teachers kicked off a march across East London on Wednesday after union leaders called a strike in protest of education cuts.

At least a thousand were present at the beginning of the rally with the National Union of Teachers saying schools across the borough had closed due to the walk-out.

IMG_3718.JPGMembers of the University and College Union took strike action across the UK today to protest at changes to pensions and pay cuts.

Staff from Tower Hamlets College, Greenwich University and University of East London took to picket lines over what they believe to be unfair increases in their pension contributions and moves to raise the retirement age.

DLR strike action gets go-ahead

Docklands Light Railway management is confident of avoiding strike action despite the Court of Appeal overturning bans on walk-outs.

Aslef and the RMT union were both ordered to scrap industrial ballot reports due to discrepancies but a ruling on Friday gave them the all clear to strike over a fall-out on pay and conditions.

00jul17transport11.JPG The 48-hour strike on the Docklands Light Railway planned for tomorrow and Friday was dramatically halted this afternoon following a last minute High Court ruling.

London's High Court granted an injunction preventing a planned 48-hour strike on the DLR after declaring there had been technical errors with the ballot.

If the strike goes ahead Serco Docklands aims to run DLR services from Tower Gateway to Mudchute every 5-10 minutes, from 7am to 7pm.

00jul17transporting11.JPGThe Docklands Light Railway will be hit by a 48 hour strike from January 20. The RMT union has instructed its members not to book on for shifts on the network between 3.59am that day until 3.58am on Saturday, January 22.

It follows a ballot of union members over disputes between the RMT and Serco Docklands, who operate the DLR, over issues including failure to consult on redundancies and the imposition of a new roster.

DLR1.JPGThe RMT Union is balloting its members over strike action on the Docklands Light Railway.

The ballot is for strike action and action short of a strike, such as refusal to work overtime, and has been prompted by an ongoing dispute between it and Serco Docklands, who operate the DLR.

The latest in a series of strikes on the Tube is due to begin on Tuesday evening but transport chiefs have promised to keep London moving.

Extra bus and river services are being put on, while some roadworks are being delayed for the duration of the 24 hour industrial action.

London life is once again being disrupted by a Tube strike today, but in fact a third of the usual service is running and more stations are open than during the last strike.

Canary Wharf Tube station was able to open at around 9.30am thanks to volunteers and union members who are not striking.

The two sides met at the offices of the conciliation service ACAS to try and reach a setttlement to avoid the strikes, the first of which is scheduled for next Monday, but negotiations proved fruitless.

00jul17transport11.JPGAs if looming strikes on the Underground are not enough to contend with the Docklands Light Railway will be hit by industrial action later this month.

The RMT union has announced there will be a walkout on the DLR between 4am on Wednesday, June 23 and 3.59am on Saturday, June 26. The union's members will also refuse to work any overtime on Monday, June 28.
