Short-term pain will lead to long-term gain for Docklands Light Railway passengers as the network gears up for its Olympic challenge.

The entire DLR will be suspended this weekend as a new signal control system is installed in preparation for next year's Games, while the Bank/Tower Gateway to Canary Wharf section will shut from Christmas Eve until January 2 as 12km of rail is replaced.

The over-run of the Jubilee line upgrade is likely to cost Tube Lines around £50million.

That's how much the Canary Wharf-based engineering consortium will lose for its failure to complete the installation of new signalling on the line by the end of last year, according to chief executive Dean Finch.

Jubilee line users face months of weekend closures in the new year and no service at all over Easter as upgrade work continues.

From January 9 sections of the line will be shut for all but three weekends up to and including Easter, when the entire line will close between April 2-5.
