FORMER Isle of Dogs boater Mark Hunter swept to Olympic gold in Beijing on Sunday.

Mark, 30, and teammate Zac Purchase, 22, became the first British rowers to take gold in the lightweight men's double sculls, ahead of rivals Greece and Denmark.

The East End-born athlete began his rowing career at the Poplar, Blackwall and District club, and trained for six years in a bid to skipper passenger and freight boats on the Thames.

That’s exactly what happened to two scullers from Poplar, Blackwall and District Rowing Club on the Isle of Dogs. Dan Bartlett and Ash Haynes were selected for the England squad at the Home International regatta in Cardiff at the end of July.

Dan, 33, admitted the call-up came as something of a shock, despite his years of experience on the water.

Should a big medal haul inspire Wharfers to take up the sport there’s a hidden gem nestling just up the road in the Royal Docks – the London Regatta Centre.

With first-class facilities on offer the centre is bracing itself for an upsurge in interest and head coach Simon Goodey hopes people will give it a try.

He said: “Anyone wanting to give rowing a go is more than welcome. Adults can join Curlew Rowing Club while youngsters have the Royal Docks Rowing Club, part of London Youth Rowing scheme.

British adaptive rower Tom Aggar set a new world best for the single sculls at the FISA invitation meeting at the London Regatta Centre on Saturday.

The Royal Docks venue saw Aggar complete the 1,000m course in five minutes four seconds, shaving nine seconds off the mark he set when he won the world championships in Germany last September.
