Review: Dion, West India Quay

IN the midst of an economic downturn, a Champagne bar doesn’t naturally seem like the best place to hide out.

But Dion London’s ongoing half-price offer should give you the perfect excuse to wallow in some serious luxury in West India Quay.

The stylishly-minimalist bar has a tempting credit crunch lunch offer for the rest of the month, allowing you to chop your bill in half when you wander out to enjoy the fiendishly-contrary English summer sun.

Dion is also offering its evening canape menu at lunchtime during the summer, and anyone ordering a decadent bottle of Veuve Clicquot 2002 will also be able to tuck into a dozen oysters or two canape dishes.

SO who's going to watch the Watchmen?

The film version of Alan Moore's dark and intriguing superhero comic may have slipped under the radar of those fools who avoid books with pictures. But judging from the cheers at the BFI's Movie-con event at the weekend, film fans won't just be watching - they'll be drooling as well.

Jon Massey tastes the Mediterranean at Canada Square Park's Park Bar

BB-aug14-parkbar1.jpg

Should the British summer ever provide an afternoon pleasant enough to sit outside, Wharfers could do worse than to head for The Park Bar in Canada Square.

And what better to go with your chilled glass of Pinot Grigio or Pimms than a selection of treats from Waitrose new Delicatezze range, currently on sale there?

This collection of tasty bites, based on flavours found all round the Mediterranean, come in handy plastic tubs and in quantities ideal for sharing. As the bar staff provided an ample supply of fizzy refreshment, I tucked in to some of the delicacies.

Lucia Blash finds an oasis of calm in lunchtime chaos

BB-aug7-fourseasons2web.jpg

There is no quiet place in the white man’s city. No place to hear the unfurling of leaves or the rustle of an insects wing.”

Spoken back in 1854 by Chief Seattle, leader of the Suquamish Native American Tribe.

Looking for a quiet place to enjoy a spot of lunch here at the Wharf, you’d have to agree with the sage.

We once heard a man speak of a place, a haven of peace and tranquillity amidst the hurly burly of lunchtime dining. We thought he was touched by the sun. For certain, it was an urban myth.

Review: Kylie at The O2 arena

EVERYONE loves Kylie, and now I know why.

The Kylie phenomenon is one of modern culture's more enduring enigmas - how she has made an, at best, modest talent stretch across more than two decades is anyone's guess, but there she was, strutting her stuff to an adoring audience at The O2 arena on Wednesday, July 30.

And, amazingly, it was great stuff she was strutting.

There was never much doubt the pint-sized popstrel would draw in the crowds, playing to a house packed with kiddies, camp men and a host of young(ish) mothers who presumably were her original audience two decades ago.

Having read Cass Pennant’s autobiography it is plain to see that making a film about his life was never going to be easy.

DRIVE-TIME favourites Blondie kick off just as a lumbering passenger jet thunders imposingly over the stage.

"This is a beautiful spot, but it's a little remote", muses Debbie Harry, in the midst of a car park a little way east of Royal Docks' Excel centre.

Admittedly, we are several stops from the lights of the West End, on the business end of a commercial flight path.

Review: The Dark Knight in IMAX

GOTHAM'S shadowy crimefighter boasts a batsuit made out of a Kevlar material which can deflect bullets and looks great in the dark.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be a zip in the crotch, which is why there’s a huge queue of caped avengers waiting for the men’s cubicles at the BFI IMAX in South Bank.

THERE was no holding back for Mick Hucknall as he brought his vocal talents to the IndigO2 last night.

The Simply Red singer showcased his "Tribute to Bobby Bland" album to an appreciative audience and they were not disappointed as Hucknall, in fine voice, ripped through Bland's back catalogue.

Rousing versions of "I Wouldn't Treat a Dog", "I Pity the Fool" and "Cry, Cry, Cry" had the audience on its feet well before the end of a rather short set.

THERE was something for everyone at the Indigo2 last night.

Sam Sparro and The Fratellis were heading the star-studded bill for the recorded ITV2 event. But it was opening act N.E.R.D that started the evening off with a bang.

THE TINY floral lady staggered out of prehistoric London and plonked herself down next to a rudimentary flint axe.

"Urgh. It's all hot and smelly over there", she moaned, gesturing at the crowd of people slotted together shoulder to shoulder like tittering Tetris blocks.

Review: dion champagne bar

By Giles Broadbent on June 5, 2008 5:02 PM |

By Raksha Malde-Kara Dion restaurant in Canary Wharf not only claims to have the longest quality champagne list in London but has now added a host of culinary delights to its menu.

The champagne list is as thick as a telephone directory and boasts the finest champagne brands, including a vintage bottle of Krug Collection Magnum 1979 at £1,500 and even a nebuchadnezzar at £1,700.
