The people of Tower Hamlets have decided they do want to have a directly elected mayor running the borough.
In a referendum on Thursday, residents voted 60,758 to 39,857 in favour of the change to the way Tower Hamlets Council is run.
Labour's Jim Fitzpatrick has hung onto his Parliamentary seat and beat Respect's George Galloway into third in the process.
Mr Fitzpatrick polled 18,679 votes, while Conservative candidate Tim Archer came second with 12,649. Mr Galloway received 8,160 votes.

Three men have been arrested for public order offences after it was alleged George Galloway and his campaign team were attacked at the weekend.
The candidate for the Poplar and Limehouse seat in next month's general election said he and Respect party colleagues were verbally and physically abused at Shadwell's Watney Market on Saturday afternoon.

This may be my last column before the General Election. Readers of The Wharf might therefore find themselves more interested than usual in these thoughts. I've represented this area for 13 years, in Parliament and in all my dealings with various organisations and agencies, on behalf of local people. The voters will again be passing judgment soon.

The press conference was for Bangladeshi media only, but a small group of politicians were outside anyway.
Some were taking pictures against the window, hands outstretched in a show of mock confusion. One pushed away the blocking arm of a man at the door, and strode into the doorway.
