Cocktails seem to be in and out of fashion more often than Lady GaGa.

But are they cool? Gone are the days of naff paper umbrellas, sparklers and glacé cherries.

Now sophisticated cocktail bars specialise in serving up suave concoctions that seem to be back in vogue.

While Oliver had Wharfers in a stew as they queued to meet him on Tuesday, laid-back Stein was here the day before to chew the fat with The Wharf about the whole TV cooking phenomenon.

For Ainsley Harriott, presenter of BBC's Ready Steady Cook, that means being possibly the most cheerful man currently on the telly.

For the next few days at least, many of the country have vowed to turn into hamsters in a bid to get fit and wear down those teeth early in 2009.

But while they’re eating lettuce and running around in wheels, there’s more lardy loveliness for the rest of us unhealthy, meat-guzzling bacon-fanciers.
