Artist Yinka Shonibare's fourth plinth artwork Nelson's Ship In A Bottle captures the essence of contemporary Britain with its reflection of a glorious past, a comment on diversity and a wry sense of humour.

That handy visual metaphor for old and new is one of the key reasons the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich wants the piece as the jewel in the crown of the new Sammy Ofer wing.
