Tower Hamlets Labour Party have picked John Biggs as their candidate for the borough's mayoral elections next year.

Biggs is currently a London Assembly member for City and the East and has led the borough council in the past. He now takes on Lutfur Rahman for control of the £1.2billion budget.

The fitting-out of Crossrail's station box at Woolwich needs to be clarified by Mayor Boris Johnson, say London Assembly members.

The body's transport committee, chaired by Caroline Pidgeon, is asking for the Mayor's intervention to ensure the station can be used when the high-speed rail service is launched in 2018.

The hotly-debated proposal for a Thames super-sewer will edge closer to planning consent when an application is submitted today.

Thames Water, the company behind the development, will present its 50,000 page Thames Tideway Tunnel document to the Planning Inspectorate, saying the scheme is "urgently required" to tackle untreated sewage that seeps into the tidal stretches of the river.
