The Wapping-born writer of one of Britain's favourite hymns - Amazing Grace - had a life of two halves - from slave merchant to priest.

John Newton (1725-1807) was initially press-ganged into service on the sea, but eventually, of his own volition, worked the West Africa coast buying slaves. The "ghosts" of these slaves haunted him in later life.
