Excel hotel promises jobs in Newham

Up to 200 full-time jobs could be heading to Docklands after plans for a new hotel at Excel received outline approval.

Newham Council's development control committee met last Wednesday to discuss the application for the 280-room hotel and voted unanimously to accept it.

CANARY Wharf Group has upped its contributions to get the green-light for a hotel.

Subsidiary South Quay Properties is keen to build a 37-storey hotel dubbed Newfoundland to the west of the estate.

But Tower Hamlets Council deferred its application in August, asking for more cash for local services.
Newfoundland would feature 150 rooms, and 78 serviced apartments.

The company has now raised its Section 106 contribution from £915,284 to £1,115,284, including an additional £100,000 donation to the Isle of Dogs Community Foundation.

GUESTS at two East London hotels were evacuated after fires just three days apart.

A supsected arson attack on a ground floor room at the Travelodge on Coriander Avenue forced 300 people into the car park last Tuesday night (March 4). And Custom House Hotel lost the use of all of its standard rooms on Friday (March 7), after a blaze damaged half of the building's roof and top floor.

Around 20 firefighters and four fire engines were called to quell the Travelodge fire after staff raised the alarm at 10.48pm. Crews from Poplar, Silvertown and Bow fire stations attended, and London Ambulance Service treated one person at the scene for slight smoke inhalation.
