Eleven rescued in Whitechapel fire

A blaze in a block of flats on Friday morning saw a team of firefighters dramatically rescue 11 people, including two children.

London Fire Brigade were called at 4.55am to the scene at New Road, between Whitechapel and Shadwell. Upstairs residents were trapped as the ground floor was on fire.

Union officers are urging Boris Johnson to look again at plans to shut fire stations after one earmarked for closure saved a life.

Firefighters in Woolwich - a team due to be scrapped under the proposals - managed to get to an unconscious woman trapped in a burning home after their colleagues in Plumstead were caught in heavy traffic.

Two men rescued from flat fire

fire.jpgFirefighters rescued two men from a burning building in the early hours of this morning.

The blaze damaged a restaurant and flats on West India Dock Road.

Around 70 firefighters tackled a blaze at a chemical processing plant in Greenwich overnight and people were initially advised to keep their windows shut as a precaution.

Although the fire was under control by the morning, the Blackwall tunnel was affected, creating Monday morning congestion.

Emergency services were called to HSBC head office in Canary Wharf this morning after reports of a suspect package.

Staff were evacuated and a temporary cordon was put in place on Upper Bank Street and around Canada Square Park whilst the situation was dealt with.
