The last couple of years have not been easy for businesses in the UK. With the financial system in meltdown, household names going to the wall or being sold and banks holding out the begging bowl, it has been a crazy time to be running a business.

It is believed the conferences would bring in £100million for the capital.

The UK's biking community headed to the Excel centre at the weekend for the annual Motorcycle Show.

Latest models from the likes of Ducati, Harley Davidson and BMW were on parade as well as a range of motorcycle accessories, while a dramatic stunt show also took place.

A decision on whether to grant Sunborn International's yacht an extended stay in the Royal Docks has been deferred until March.

Newham Council had approved a previous application in October to put a 153 room hotel yacht next to the Excel centre.

DeGale, who won middleweight gold in Beijing in 2008, turned professional at the start of last year, denying himself the chance of more Olympic glory in London.

Police say they still have permission to use stop and search powers, despite a European ruling that they are in breach of the Human Rights Act.

Since the Home Office has pledged to appeal the decision, the Metropolitan Police says its authorisation "remains in force in specified locations across London".

Thousands of marine fans braved the freezing conditions for the beginning of this year's London Boat Show at the Excel.

Early reports suggest that due to the ongoing recession the event is likely to be less lucrative than the last few years' average attendance of 120,000.

Police powers to randomly stop and search citizens have been declared illegal by the European Court of Human Rights.

Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 enables individuals to be searched "without reasonable suspicion". But the court declared yesterday that this carried "a clear risk of arbitrariness" and was not in accordance with the Human Rights Act.

X-Factor runner ups Stacey Solomon and Olly Murs opened the London International Boat Show at Excel on Friday in the first of 10 days at the exhibition centre.

The singers each performed for the crowd before cutting the ribbon, at the event which this year sees over 80 new product launches.

Boats drop in for Excel event

The Boat Show kicks off this week with a series of dramatic demonstrations from the Royal Engineers.

It is first time the group, one of the corps of the British Army, has appeared at the 56-year-old event. It will put on displays of its military craft three times a day.

Plans to place a 153 bedroom yacht next to the Excel were approved on Wednesday night despite heavy objections from the local community.

The decision by Newham Council will see the ship, a replacement for the original yacht which was relocated to Lagos, put next to Royal Victoria Square on a 15-year lease.

Newham councillors have voted unanimously to approve an outline planning application for a 280 room hotel at the Excel centre.

The decision was made after an agreement was reached between the council and Excel on its financial contributions to the community.
