collins142.jpgTower Hamlets Council has announced the resignation of chief executive Dr Kevan Collins after two years in the job.

Dr Collins is leaving the council to head up the newly created Education Endowment Foundation, a £200 million project aimed at improving the educational attainment of children on free school meals in poorly performing schools.

The Audit Commission has roundly condemned the practice of councils parting with their chief executives for reasons that are personal and inconsequential in every respect bar the attendant six-figure pay-offs.

It shouldn't be forgotten that the chief executive of Tower Hamlets left in such circumstances and with a similar sum.

Only days apart from each other we learnt that the Audit Commission has criticised the Labour-run Tower Hamlets council for the way it sacked its chief executive and the size of the bill that resulted and that there will be no increase in council tax next year. No increase in council tax is to be welcomed. But it's only a start.
