An Isle of Dogs free school celebrating its first birthday has doubled pupil intake for the new September term, to meet massive demand for places.

Principal Sarah Counter is preparing to lead the second year of teaching at Canary Wharf College, a primary school founded by parents under the Government's Free School Scheme, in the heart of the Docklands.

The host of free schools popping up in the UK will be boosted after Barclays offered its expertise to help with their setting up and running.

Those that could stand to benefit include Canary Wharf College, which was established last year, and the recently proposed International Academy of Greenwich, which aims to start classes in 2013 if approved by the Department for Education.

The Department for Education entered into a funding agreement with the college, which is taking over a site at the 100-year-old Docklands Settlement Centre for its first intake of students.

Parents have until Friday to apply for a place in an independent free school on the Isle of Dogs after Michael Gove gave it the green light this week.
