Emirates Air Line launch photo.jpgPassengers could be crossing the River Thames using the Emirates Air Line from May 1.

The Wharf has learned that's the date Transport for London has pencilled in for the opening of the £50million cable car between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks.

Emirates Air Line launch photo.jpgThe first tower of the Emirates Air Line was completed this week as the transport link made its debut on the Tube map.

The North Intermediate Tower in the Royal Docks is the first of three being built to carry a cable car across the Thames. It is over 200ft tall and weighs 270 tonnes, but will be smallest of the three.

Emirates Air Line launch photo.jpgLondon Assembly member John Biggs has asked Mayor of London Boris Johnson for further details about Emirates Airlines sponsorship of the Thames cable car.

Mr Johnson unveiled Emirates as the scheme's sponsor last Friday, with the airline paying £36million over 10 years for branding rights.

Work is underway to build the link between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks, with completion expected next summer.

The rise, which comes into effect on January 2, will see average pay as you go Oyster fares in Zone 1 go up by 10p to £2, while bus fares rise to £1.40.

North Station 1.jpgIt's only seven weeks since construction began on the Thames cable car but don't bet against it being operational before the London Olympics.

The £50million link from the Royal Docks to the Greenwich Peninsula is one Mayor of London Boris Johnson has personally pushed through, despite the absence of promised private investment.

It's not finished yet - and we don't even know when it will be - but Boris' cable car linking Greenwich with the Royal Docks has already won a prize.

The Transport for London design scooped top place for 'Travelling - Unbuilt Winner' at the inaugural New London Awards at Guildhall in the City on Tuesday.

Construction of the passenger stations on both sides of the river has started, with piles being driven deep into the ground to support the foundations. The scheme, which will cost at least £56million could be finished in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Boris Johnson has admitted public funds could be used on the planned cable car linking the Excel to The O2.

The London Mayor has always said the river crossing would be paid for by private finance. However, this week he backtracked and said he could not 'guarantee' it would be fully paid for by the private sector.

00jul24boris7.JPGMayor of London Boris Johnson was on elusive form this morning when he was quizzed by the London Assembly about two major transport projects affecting east London.

Mr Johnson, facing his monthly Mayor's Question Time, admitted increased services on the Jubilee line are now likely to be running in the autumn rather than July, while the Thames cable car will open "when it's good and ready".

As I wrote last time, Mayor Boris Johnson has announced that he will build that cable car across the Thames, between The O2 and Excel.

I have misgivings about it: whether it's really that much of a transport priority and over the broken promises about cost - but I have learnt a little more.

AA-may21-clippers2.jpgThames Clippers is planning to expand its river bus service with the introduction of a shuttle boat between Blackfriars and Vauxhall.

Sean Collins, managing director and co-founder of the company, hopes to introduce the service to link up with a new development at St George's Wharf, much further west than current commuter links.

aa-jan27-Cable142.jpgMayor of London Boris Johnson has formally confirmed that work to build a cable car across the Thames will begin this summer and that Transport for London will foot the bill.

As revealed exclusively in The Wharf last week, work will start on the scheme after contractors for the £40million link were confirmed.

aa-jan27-Cable142.jpgWork on Boris Johnson's Thames cable car should start this summer with a preferred bidder for the £40million link having been selected.

The bidder, who will not be named until legal agreements have been signed, will start work on the crossing by the summer, and it could be operational in time for next year's Olympic Games.

The go-ahead has been given to the planned Thames Cable Car linking Greenwich Peninsula and Royal Docks.

The Greater London Authority gave final permission for the scheme which will carry up to 2,500 passengers an hour between The O2 arena and Excel.

aa-jan27-Cable142.jpgThe proposed Thames cable car has been approved by both Newham and Greenwich Councils, but mystery shrouds when funding for the £25million project will be agreed.

The ambitious link, which will span the river from The O2 to the Royal Docks was given the green light by Greenwich Council's planning department last night, while Newham Council gave it the nod last week.

As 2011 dawns, it's a great opportunity to look into our green crystal ball and see what could be in store for Wharfers in the next 12 months.

One issue is sure to dominate life in the east end, and that's the approaching Olympics.

I recently met TfL to discuss Mayor Boris Johnson's cycle hire scheme and its expansion to Tower Hamlets, including the Wharf.

It's a nice scheme which the mayor said would cost us nothing. It's now looking rather expensive - even after Barclays' contribution it has cost us £79million so far, with more for the extension

KulverRanger142.JPGBoris bikes will hit the streets of east London at the end of next year, with Canary Wharf just one of the places welcoming them.

The Wharf spoke to Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's transport adviser, about why the scheme's extension east, as well as other issue affecting the area.

aa-nov4-cablesouthstation.jpgThe Mayor of London's proposed £25million cable car scheme across the Thames could be extended to Canary Wharf if it proves a hit with fare-paying passengers.

Mr Johnson unveiled plans for the crossing between The O2 and the Royal Docks in July, and is currently waiting to finalise funding with private investors.
