Mexican food will be keeping skaters warm when the Canary Wharf Ice Rink returns next month.

Wahaca, based at the nearby Park Pavilion, will provide the catering for the winter facility that is soon to be returning to Canada Square Park for its seventh consecutive year.

Queues snaked across Canada Square Park today (July 14) as Wahaca staff dished out complementary Burritos.

Last week saw the announcement of this year's Observer Food Monthly Awards, recognising all that is great and good in the gastronomic world.

The awards are the highlight of the foodie calendar, and winners this year included Jamie Oliver, Prue Leith and east London's trendy Hawksmoor.

She's no stranger to these parts, having opened a branch of her Wahaca restaurant in Canada Square Pavilion last November, and was in Canada Square mall last Tuesday to promote her latest cookbook.

Since opening in November the Mexican restaurant has become a Wharf favourite, rewarding the faith of owners Thomasina Miers and Mark Selby that their spicy food would prove popular.

The hungry lunchers of Canary Wharf are never short of options from across the culinary map although, until recently, Central America was woefully under-represented.

All that is changing thanks to a combination of former Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers, and the lesser known US businessman Brandon Stephens.

The new dining destinations around Canada Square could help the Canary Wharf Ice Rink enjoy its "best year ever".

By the time the first skater steps onto the ice on November 14, all of the restaurants in the new Park Pavilion are expected to be open.

Few things have made me as excited in recent months as the news that Wahaca is coming to Canary Wharf.

The thought of being able to grab a quick taco on the way home from work is already making me hungry.
