Tower Hamlets owns a sculpture worth millions, designed by a world-famous artist.
Sadly, you have to trundle more than 200 miles north to see it.

Avant-garde Yorkshire-born sculptor Henry Moore created Draped Seated Woman for the borough in 1957 while working on a commission for the Unesco headquarters in Paris.

It's nearly time for the General Election and we have council elections, too, and a referendum on a directly elected Mayor in Tower Hamlets.

In the Mayoral referendum, I'll be voting "No". The local council has been performing well, with huge challenges. It's been regarded as a Beacon Council for over five years now.

It must be an election year as the Labour-run Tower Hamlets Council has proposed to freeze Council Tax.

Coincidentally, the last time Council Tax was frozen in Tower Hamlets was in 2006, also an election year.

There's an ice cream van selling drugs on Galbraith Street.

And that's not all. Drunks are shouting late into the night and tearing around Virginia Quay. New Union Wharf residents aren't happy about graffiti, drug dealing and vandalism, and there isn't enough lighting in St John's Park.

In a fast-changing area like Tower Hamlets it is imperative that what little heritage we've got left is cared for and preserved.

So it's especially disappointing that the Grade II listed Limehouse Library on the Commercial Road is being left to rot. I am heartbroken by its shocking state of disrepair.

The local Conservative Party recently attacked me over Labour's housing record.

I thought they had a cheek: this from the party that sold off the best council properties and refused to allow them to be replaced, by forcing councils to use the monies raised elsewhere. Breathtaking!

Anyone who knows Tower Hamlets knows all about the major housing problems the borough faces.

There are some 23,000 people on the housing waiting list, with 14,000 on the list are living in chronic overcrowding. Housing is where the Government and the Labour-run council have let local people down the most.

RoyalNavalCollege142.jpgFancy getting out of the house this weekend and taking a peek round someone else's pad?

Well, why not take advantage of the annual Open House weekend where hundreds of buildings across the capital throw open their doors for free in a celebration of the best of British architecture.

We are of course all concerned about the economy but different political parties have different solutions for dealing with it.

The next few months will clarify whether the worst is over, and in the next few years we will understand whether we made the right choices.

I want to return to the subject of unemployment and how Tower Hamlets is failing our young people. We have the worst unemployment rate in the country, with 11.7 per cent of the population out of work.

As bad as that statistic is, it hides an even bigger issue - the problem of youth unemployment.

Ken Livingstone believes East London boroughs are "bearing the brunt" of Boris Johnson's affordable housing targets for the capital.

The former Mayor believes his successor's more "collaborative" approach has allowed some boroughs to push for lower requirements, leaving others to "fill the gap".

This week I had the great privilege to attend a Tower Hamlets Citizenship ceremony at the Tower of London.

Some 32 individuals representing 17 nationalities took the oath to The Queen and the British way of life.

aa-mar19-brainiac.jpgFor many people science at school was pretty dull jumble of test tubes and incomprehensible formulas.

But one man has been on a crusade in recent years to make the subject interesting to kids of all ages, with spectacular results.

The number of pricey homes on the market in Canary Wharf and Docklands has doubled according to data from a property website.

Rightmove has released a report claiming there has been a 12.4 per cent rise in the number of properties hitting the market in Tower Hamlets.

HSBC is giving Tower Hamlets youngsters something other than money to bank on after signing up for a mentoring scheme.

Volunteers from the Canary Wharf-based bank have stepped in to offer careers advice and guidance to 60 students from Stepney Green school.

16feb28dymphna.jpgA DOCKLANDS charity worker is starring in a new ad campaign encouraging women to keep breast
screening appointments.

Mum-of-four Dymphna Dale, of Strafford Street on the Isle of Dogs, features on posters about the routine tests at bus shelters across Tower Hamlets.

All women between the ages of 50 and 70 are invited for screening every three years, with the process saving an estimated 1,400 lives in Britain annually.

More than 1,500 women in Tower Hamlets have been screened at Mile End Hospital since the current round of testing began in October.

Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust (PCT) hopes the new campaign will inspire the rest to follow suit and attend check-ups before the round closes in April.
