Royal Charter.jpgGreenwich celebrated officially becoming a Royal Borough today as the Royal Charter was delivered to the Town Hall.

The status was bestowed by The Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee and this weekend will see a range of celebrations across Greenwich to celebrate the event, culminating in a fireworks display at the Old Royal Naval College on Sunday evening.

The waterfront display will be set to music at the Old Royal Naval College and will start at 6pm, ending a whole day of celebrations in the town on February 5.

The Queen bestowed the honour on the borough last year, and the Council has confirmed that the title of the Royal Borough of Greenwich will be formally adopted on February 3 - and it will prompt a weekend of celebrations across the area.

Leader of Greenwich Council, Cllr Chris Roberts has revealed that The Queen will be in the town next spring to officially reopen the tea clipper, which has been undergoing a multi-million pound restoration for the last five years.

Docklands Sinfonia's founder and musical director Spencer Down said: "It was a great day and went really well, we got the call inviting us to perform for the Queen and only had two days to rehearse."

Dressed in mauve she was welcomed with cheers, applause and waving flags before touring the building and meeting some of the 4,000 staff based there.

Prime Minister Tony Blair claimed it would be a "beacon to the world" but for many years Greenwich's Millennium Dome was a national embarrassment.

A decade has passed since one of the most recognisable landmarks in London opened.

The title, which will take effect from 2012, was conferred by the Queen to recognise the close and historic links between Greenwich and royalty.

This week I had the great privilege to attend a Tower Hamlets Citizenship ceremony at the Tower of London.

Some 32 individuals representing 17 nationalities took the oath to The Queen and the British way of life.

The Queen picked the perfect day to visit an umbrella factory as the heavens opened an hour before she looked round Fulton's factory in Blackwall. In company with the Duke of Edinburgh, she visited the family run business, which was awarded the Royal Warrant for supplying her umbrellas in January this year.

Workers in east London were treated to a royal visit today (March 25).

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh dropped in on staff at the Britvic factory in Beckton, the Fulton umbrella factory in Canary Wharf and the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Click through for more pictures.
