"The Isle of Dogs is a magnet for plastic rubbish," says Alice Hall of environmental charity Thames 21.

It is not that the residents are chucking their carriers bags into the river but it is volunteers from the community who have been clearing it up.

Wimbledon has the Wombles but the Isle of Dogs has Thames21 - a charity that is cleaning up our waterways.

More than 150 volunteers helped pull everything from Victorian ironwork to plastic bags out of the River Thames as part of a huge clean up last week.

The low spring tide this year exposed the banks of the Thames to the full glare of public view. It didn't present a pretty site.

Volunteers donned welly boots to trudge through the clammy mud at the Isle of Dogs and North Woolwich and found a range of unsavoury and unsightly items.

The lowest tide for five years has revealed the amount of rubbish usually hidden by the waters of the Thames.

Included in the haul of shame were a shopping trolley and plastic bags, with one dating back to 1977.
