A Chinese firm looks to have secured approval to redevelop the area around Royal Albert Dock.

The project to transform 35 acres north of the London City Airport was put out for tender in a joint scheme between Newham and London Mayor Boris Johnson in August.

A shortlist of seven companies are battling to win the contract to redevelop part of the Royal Docks.

The London Development Agency and Newham Council have invited the companies to submit their outline proposals for the 50-acre Silvertown Quays site before deciding on a preferred developer next March.

Plans to turn derelict land in Beckton into a state-of-the-art sports centre have been approved by Newham councillors.

The University of East London is behind the application for the venue, which will be called Sports Dock and open at the end of 2011.
