Ed Miliband channelled Benjamin Disraeli as he called for "one nation banking" in a speech at Canary Wharf this morning.

The Labour leader said the path the banking industry had taken in recent years would lead to a separation of society "economically, geographically, and socially" and said he would change the rules to create "a fairer society and an economy that pays its way in the world".

Gordon Brown has warned of tough times ahead for the nation's economy, in a speech at Reuters on Wednesday morning.

The Prime Minister also used the Canary Wharf event to announce the Government would lay out its budget plans on March 24.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg believes major banks should be broken up to avoid a repeat of last year's financial crash.

Mr Clegg told a Reuters Newsmaker event in Canary Wharf on Monday that "we cannot afford mistakes in the City of London to hold a gun to the head of the rest of the economy".

darling142.jpgChancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling was in Canary Wharf this morning and used the opportunity to criticize the return of the bonus culture.

Mr Darling singled out Goldman Sachs, which reported bumper profits last week, saying it sent out the "wrong signals" with huge pay awards.

Editorial staff at Thomson Reuters could be manning picket lines outside its Canary Wharf offices after they voted in favour of industrial action. Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) who used to work for Thomson Financial News before the company merged with Reuters last year have voted 59 per cent in favour of a strike and 83 per cent for action short of a strike.

PRIME minister Gordon Brown wants to "root out the irresponsible risk taking" in the banking sector after launching a £37billion taxpayer bail-out.

The Government are to pump £20billion into the Royal Bank of Scotland and £17billion into the recently-merged Lloyds TSB and HBOS institution.

Reuters got the better of Canary Wharf rivals Citigroup in a keenly contested City League cup clash.

The plate competition match at Charlton Park saw the media company beat their banking neighbours 43 - 31 on Wednesday evening (March 26).

It was a game of two very different halves in wet and windy conditions. Citigroup led 24-5 at half-time and also scored first in the second period.

The City Scrum touch rugby tournament next Thursday (April 3), at the Honourable Artillery Company in City Road, will see 10 teams from banks and other institutions battle it out to be the City’s top rugby dogs.

The tournament is being organised by law firm Norton Rose, and Canary Wharf is well represented with teams from HSBC, Reuters, Citigroup and Credit Suisse all taking part.
