I've been recovering from the operation I underwent in December, and getting back in the swing of things.

I've spent the first week of the new year visiting Bangladesh. A third of the constituency I hope to represent, Poplar and Limehouse, are from, or their families originate from, Bangladesh.

It's important to get to know and understand as much as possible about all the people of the constituency and my second trip to Bangladesh has really helped me to do this.

A DLR passenger was robbed at knifepoint by two men as he was leaving Poplar station.

The 37-year-old white male was making his way down the stairs at Castor Lane when he saw two males aged around 18 loitering at the bottom.

A man who threw the mother of his three children from an eighth floor balcony has been sentenced to life.

Terence Neale, 51, was found guilty at the Old Bailey on Tuesday of the murder Ashley Reynolds, 23, at their home in Midship Point on July 6 last year.

Poplar flat evacuated due to fire

Around 20 people were evacuated from a Poplar flat during a fire on Sunday.

Fire crews from Millwall and surrounding stations were called to the four-storey building in Tiller Road at 10.25pm. The team of eight fire engines and 40 firefighters had the blaze under control by 1.08am, with damage limited to a quarter of the roof and a small part of the third floor.

This is a minor but important change to further improve the protection of vulnerable individuals who are learning to drive from the tiny minority of driving instructors who have been convicted of a sexual or a violent criminal offence.

Standing at Heathrow Airport arrivals, PC Roger Grimes was waiting for a young girl he had helped rescue from a forced marriage.

PC Grimes, a policeman attached to Tower Hamlets College in Poplar, had spent the last week assisting the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's Forced Marriage Unit to get the student back from Bangladesh.

STAFF at the DLR control room could hold a 24-hour strike next week after a breakdown in talks between the RMT and Serco Docklands.

Negotiations have been ongoing over proposals to reduce weekend working hours which the union argues will cost 30 staff 24 rest days.

Docklands Light Railway workers will decide later this month whether to walk out in a row over shifts.

The Rail Maritime and Transport union has advised its members to strike over plans to replace the current 12-hour weekend shifts with eight-hour duties on January 5. It claims DLR operator Serco's action would deprive 30 staff of 24 rest days a year.

A prolific offender who attacked a minicab driver was tracked down using the vomit he had left behind.

Cahir Street resident Patrick Shiels fled after fracturing the cabbie's jaw in Alpha Grove at 2.45am on May 2. But he allowed police to pick up his trail by throwing up in the vehicle during his trip.

POLICE are hunting a group of men who stabbed a 28-year-old in the head, neck and face before setting their dog on him.

The victim is in a poor but stable condition in hospital after the assault, which took place outside shops in Spey Street, Poplar.
