clippers.jpgThames Clippers passengers should brace themselves for fare rises of up to nine per cent from the New Year.

The river bus company, now sponsored by KPMG, has announced its fares will increase on January 2, with a single ticket up nine per cent from £5.50 to £6.

00jul17transport1.JPGThe Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has confirmed a seven per cent rise in fares across London transport from next January.

The rise, which comes into effect on January 2, will see average pay as you go Oyster fares in Zone 1 go up by 10p to £2, while bus fares rise to £1.40.

While the move will be welcomed by passengers angered by the axing of post 9pm services last November, a surcharge will be applied on the reinstated boats, with season ticket holders asked to pay a £2 surcharge. Oyster discounts will not apply.

The Mayor's office is mulling over the possibility of a Zone Seven following a summit with train operating companies.

More than a month after Oyster's roll-out on the railway, transport adviser Kulveer Ranger told The Wharf that there were discussions about adding "end of line" stops into London's travel web.

Thames Clippers users will be able to use pay-as-you-go Oyster cards on the river from today.

Transport for London also confirmed this morning that the Oyster roll-out would spread to overground rail around London from January, as revealed in The Wharf earlier this month.

Oyster cards should be valid on rail networks around London for the first time in January.

Rail companies in the capital are completing fine tuning with a view to bringing a pay-as-you-go system into action in the first month of 2010.

Commuters will be soon be able to enjoy special deals when they combine river and rail on their way to work.

Thames Clippers managing director Sean Collins told The Wharf that his fast-ferry company was negotiating with rail operators to offer joint ticketing deals within the next few weeks.

Oyster cards will be accepted on Thames Clipper ferries from November.

A new direct service from Canary Wharf to London Bridge has also been unveiled by London Mayor Boris Johnson as part of a package of river transport improvements for the capital.

The Wharf can reveal the company is close to agreeing a deal with Transport for London to enable pay-as-you-go Oyster cards to be used on the service, and the system could be operational by the autumn.

Oyster failure hits London again

CHAOS hit the underground system at rush-hour on Friday when for the Oyster card system failed.

It is the second time this month Tube stations have been hit by problems with the cards.

Passengers at Canary Wharf were told not to "touch in and out" at the sensors but to walk through the open barriers.
