EDF has denied the reason for failing to deliver a 'green torch' for the 2012 Games was down to safety concerns.

It emerged on Wednesday the energy group, which was looking at putting together a carbon-neutral flame for the Olympic torch, was unable to develop a product in time.

A prototype of the Olympic torch was unveiled on Wednesday morning to encourage the British public to nominate people to carry it.

The torch, with will carry the Olympic flame across the UK next year, is 80cm high, weighs 800g and is made of aluminium alloy.

LONDON will still have an Olympic Torch relay in 2012 despite the trouble surrounding the flame’s visit to the capital at the weekend.

The London Organising Committee (LOCOG), based in Churchill Place, has confirmed the build-up to the 2012 Games will include a relay around the UK, although an international route looks doubtful.

A LOCOG spokeswoman said: “Our focus at the moment is on the handover at the end of the Beijing Games. But our plans for a torch relay are that we are committed to a domestic relay.

kelly.jpgDouble gold medal winner Dame Kelly Holmes will be one of 80 torchbearers heading to Docklands as part of the worldwide Beijing Olympic Torch Relay.

The athlete, who claimed two first places at the 2004 Athens Games, will be joined by broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald and actress Amara Karan, recently in The Darjeeling Limited and St Trinian’s, carrying the Olympic flame across London on Sunday, April 6.

It will be taken through 10 London boroughs, starting at Wembley Stadium, site of the 1948 Olympic Games, and finishing at the O2 Arena at North Greenwich, which is to be one of the venues for the 2012 Games.
