The future landscape of Canary Wharf is beginning to take shape after Mayor Boris Johnson rubber-stamped three major developments.

The London figurehead approved plans for West India Dock's Crossrail station, the 7.98 hectare Wood Wharf office and residential scheme, and the 37-storey Newfoundland hotel near Heron Quays.

CANARY Wharf Group has upped its contributions to get the green-light for a hotel.

Subsidiary South Quay Properties is keen to build a 37-storey hotel dubbed Newfoundland to the west of the estate.

But Tower Hamlets Council deferred its application in August, asking for more cash for local services.
Newfoundland would feature 150 rooms, and 78 serviced apartments.

The company has now raised its Section 106 contribution from £915,284 to £1,115,284, including an additional £100,000 donation to the Isle of Dogs Community Foundation.

CANARY Wharf Group may have to pay a little more to see its dreams of a hotel to the west of the estate come true.

Planners dealt an unexpected blow to subsidiary South Quay Properties' vision for the 37-storey Newfoundland development at a meeting on Thursday night, opting to defer the application in a bid to secure more financial contributions for the surrounding area.

The bid for Newfoundland, which would feature 150 hotel rooms, attracted no objections during the consultation process.

Hotel bid to be cleared?

PLANS for a new hotel on the western end of the estate could be cleared for construction today (Thursday).

Canary Wharf Group is keen to re-develop the car parking area next to Heron Quays and have had plans for a 150-bedroom hotel with 78 serviced apartments drawn up.

Its application is due to be considered by Tower Hamlets Council’s strategic development committee later this evening.

No objections to the proposal have been filed, either by planning officers or by local residents.

IT could soon be last orders for the City Pride pub.

The Westferry Road haunt looks set to make way for a flagship tower, with a hotel, apartments and retail space.

Developer Glenkerrin has plans for a large building on the site after snapping up the prime development land for a reported £32million. But it remains tight-lipped on when it hopes to call time on the watering hole.

It has been suggested that Glenkerrin is considering a building rising as high as 55-storeys, with a five-storey hotel and 400 apartments.

A BOUTIQUE 150-bedroom hotel could be on the cards near Westferry Circus.

Plans for the luxury hotel overlooking the Heron Quays roundabout have been submitted to Tower Hamlets Council.

Architect Patel Taylor has drawn up a clear and opaque glass design for the 37-storey tower and podium development, known as Newfoundland.

It has been proposed by South Quay Properties, which is part of estate owner Canary Wharf Group. The 2,500 square metre site is currently a 75-space private car park.
