The National Maritime Museum is running an exhibition of the photographs of Alan Villiers.

The Australian, born in 1903, captured the dying days of the Tall Ships in the 1920s and 30s.
Villiers first went to sea at the age of 15 on the Rosthesay Bay which operated between Australia and New Zealand.

After centuries of exploration, countless lives lost, the North West Passage is in the news again.

For the first time, this fabled trading route between the Pacific and the North Atlantic may be commercially viable. But the victory may be a hollow one - because it reveals the extent to which ice cover in the Arctic has retreated.

Adventure, failure and disaster in one of the most hostile environments on Earth will be the subjects tackled in a new exhibition set to open at the National Maritime Museum later this month. North-West Passage: An Arctic Obsession features more than 120 objects including maps, letters and native Inuit artefacts, aimed at bringing British exploration of the Arctic to life.

The multi-million-pound expansion of the National Maritime Museum has received clearance from London Mayor Boris Johnson.

The Sammy Ofer Wing, which is planned to open by 2012 at a cost of £35million, has already been approved by Greenwich Council.
