Tomlinson, with his knee heavily strapped, managed a best effort of 8.02m this morning, edging out American Marquise Goodman - who also jumped that distance - on a better series of jumps.

perri142.jpgTower Hamlets athlete Perri Shakes Drayton missed qualification for the 400m hurdles final by just one hundredth of a second at the World Athletics Championships.

Shakes Drayton clocked 55.07 seconds in finishing third in her semi-final this morning, only to be pipped as a fastest loser by Ukrainian Anastasya Rabchenyuk, who ran 55.06 secs.

The Newham & Essex Beagles athletes will both be strong contenders for medals at the Games, which start in Delhi on October 3, with Farah in fine form after breaking the British 5,000m record last week.

The 27-year-old Newham & Essex Beagles runner stormed to victory in both the 5,000m and 10,000m in Barcelona earlier this month, but he is already plotting his next medal-winning campaign.

Farah romped home in a time of 28 minutes, 24.99 seconds to clinch his first European title in Barcelona last night.

Ohuruogu has struggled with a thigh injury and missed the trials in Birmingham, but fellow Newham & Essex Beagles athletes Mo Farah, Lee Merrien and Chris Tomlinson will be competing in Barcelona from July 27.

Farah, the Newham and Essex Beagles runner, has started the year in excellent form and hopes to continue in the 3,000m at the European Indoor Championships in Turin this weekend.
