The Millwall Dock, that forms a reversed 'L' shape through the heart of the Isle of Dogs, was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1864.

The Millwall Canal Company changed its name to Millwall Freehold Land And Dock Company on incorporation and bought up 200 acres of mainly marshland.
