R101-11Christou.jpgA Greenwich man has been jailed at the Old Bailey for eight years after being convicted of a robbery in Thamesmead.

Christopher Christou, 26, of Bolton House in Trafalgar Road, was put under surveillance by the Met Police's Flying Squad for six weeks in May and June and was found to be monitoring cash in transit deliveries in preparation for the robbery.

Police in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham will have to make a combined cut of nearly £5million in next year's spending, according to recent proposals.

London Assembly member of City and East John Biggs said the cut in budgets was a great concern, particularly in the wake of recent looting and rioting in London.

BLUNDERING security guards have been partly blamed for the fire that ripped through Greenwich's Cutty Sark last year.

A joint investigation into last May's blaze revealed an industrial vacuum cleaner is likely to have been responsible for the damage to the historic tea clipper.

But senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp David Garwood also pointed the finger at the two night security guards patrolling the site that evening.

The option to shut the Limehouse premises is included under proposed sweeping changes to policing in the borough.

The West India Dock Road building is considered to be unfit for purpose and Tower Hamlets Police are
