Happy New Year and all the best for 2010. This is my first week back after the Christmas break and my operation. Thanks to everyone who sent get well wishes.

I'm only doing part-time this week, but have made a good start back, and my team has dealt with most of the business while I've been absent.

We're living through amazing times in the political arena at the moment. MPs' expenses and ministerial resignations have dominated the news.

I've redoubled my efforts to show my constituents that my main motivation is their welfare and quality of life. Other MPs share that sentiment.

First there was disbelief. Then there was anger. Now we need action. I'm talking, of course, about MPs' expenses. The Telegraph blew the whistle on the abuse of this lax system by certain members.

But the real benefit of this exposure is now the whole political system is under review.

A body that represents letting agents launched a new scheme last week designed to protect tenants from unethical practices in the industry.

Agents who belong to the Association of Residential Letting Agents (Arla) will have to abide by a new code of practice, meaning they will have to secure professional qualifications and set aside time to make sure these are up to date.
