Transport for London is increasing the capacity of the London Overground by 25 per cent in response to increased demand for the service.

Mayor Boris Johnson said five car trains would be introduced due to the success of the line which was completed at the end of 2012 with the link from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction.

An extension to the Overground system, which should improve the journey to Canary Wharf for those living in south-west London, has been unveiled.

The link, giving Clapham Junction a direct route to east London, will ease the strain on the current rail infrastructure in the area.

London's newest shopping centre opened its doors this morning and thousands of people turned up to get a taste of it.

Shops at the Westfield Stratford City opened at 10am and eager patrons were queuing up to get in from 8 o'clock. But travel problems on the Overground have hindered other people's efforts to get there.

Upgrade work on the final phases of the London Overground has been announced by Transport for London and Network Rail.

It will see closures on the line between Stratford and Gospel Oak from December 18-24 and Richmond to Stratford from December 27 to January 3.
