Controversial plans for compulsory identity cards which were due to be trialled by staff at London City Airport have been dropped.

Airside workers and pilots at City, as well as Manchester Airport, were to be the first to be issued with the cards later this year, in a Government scheme.

A fleet of new aircraft arriving at London City in September represents good news for everyone connected with the airport, according to Cityflyer boss Peter Simpson.

The airline, a subsidiary of British Airways dedicated to the Royal Docks airfield, is replacing its older RJ100 planes with new generation Embraer jets later this year.

Police have arrested five protesters after they broke into London City Airport and chained themselves to a private jet.

The incident, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, was organised by environmentalist group Plane Stupid.

VLM Airlines at London City Airport is no more. A new airline has been formed which its owners say will be a stronger force at the Royal Docks airport.

A British Airways plane came skidding to a halt on the runway after its front wheels "collapsed" at London City Airport.

Two people suffered minor injuries and one was taken to hospital after passengers evacuated the plane using emergency chutes.
