THE RIPPED regulars of The Grapes flexed their muscles in the Narrow Street Fete's battle of the bars on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Narrow Street pub put down their pints to pull their way to victory for the second year running in the annual tug of war with neighbouring bar Booty's. The win gives The Grapes a 2-1 lead in the series, which is a highlight of the yearly community-run fete.

HE’S been seen in Shakespeare, The Simpsons and the Shire – but now Sir Ian McKellen is branching out into garage music.

The venerable actor recorded a Shakespearean sonnet onto a beat created by members of the Limehouse Youth Club.

NARROW Street will again celebrate August Bank Holiday with a traditional fete this year.

Locals will flock to Ropemaker’s field for fancy dress, stalls, Pearly Kings and Queens and Punch and Judy shows on August 25.

Limehouse's own village fete was cooked up in The Grapes in Narrow Street three years ago, and has been opened by famous residents such as Ian McKellen and Cleo Rocos.

The event attracts a large number of volunteers from around the area, and there is still time to get involved.

MURDERED club-goer Curtis Smith was gunned down just hours before he was due to celebrate his first wedding anniversary.

The West London carer, 36, was visiting Club Red in Cable Street with a wheelchair-bound man when he was shot early on Sunday. He was working night shifts to pay for a new home. His wife Sara issued an appeal on Friday for any information on the murder of her husband.

THE SHOOTING of a clubber outside a Limehouse nightclub has sparked calls for increased police patrols around the area’s late-night haunts.

West Londoner Curtis Smith became the 90th person to be murdered in London this year when he was gunned down outside Cable Street’s Club Red in the early hours of Sunday morning. Carer Andrew Denty, 29, from Waterloo will appear before Thames Magistrates next week charged with the murder.

Arrest after nightclub shooting

POLICE have arrested a man following a fatal shooting outside a Limehouse nightclub.

The man, who is in his twenties, remains in custody following the murder of a 35-year-old West London man outside Club Red in Cable Street, in the early hours of Sunday, July 27.

The victim, who is believed to have been at the club with friends, was shot in the head and neck as he left the premises.

Police were called to reports of a shooting at 3.45am.

The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.

CYCLISTS are being urged to beware after bike thefts doubled in the last three months.

Incidents of reported cases in the Limehouse area have gone from six to 12 on the same period last year.

Sgt Rob Brown, of the Limehouse Safer Neighbourhood Team believes its just the tip of the iceberg.
