This is a great opportunity not only to make pancakes to use up all those free range eggs in the fridge, but also to think about sacrifice and self restraint. Lent is a chance to give something up and ponder the seriousness of life in general.

Within the Christian Calendar there is a period of forty days called Lent.

It begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. Most people seem to be aware of Lent and they often tell me what they're giving up.

Ash Wednesday on the Wharf

Two Christian events will be held at Canary Wharf next Wednesday to celebrate the beginning of Lent.

Both a lunchtime service at the prayer room in Churchill Mall and an early evening Roman Catholic mass at Barclays with the Archbishop of Westminster will take place.
