Tough new powers to tackle crime are being handed to Newham Council enforcement officers.
This morning 23 enforcement officers were accredited with limited police powers under the Police Reform Act 2002. The Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) grants the officers powers such as the confiscation of alcohol and tobacco.

Police say they still have permission to use stop and search powers, despite a European ruling that they are in breach of the Human Rights Act.
