Tower Hamlets Council saw Canary Wharf Group's contribution to a training centre as a "driving factor" in its decision to force occupiers off land at Heron Quays, an inquiry heard.

Documents referenced last week indicate officers described the money as "the key rationale" behind its decision to clear the way for CWG's Heron Quays West scheme.

Tower Hamlets Council has dismissed claims that it is Canary Wharf Group's "poodle" as the row over land at Heron Quays continues.

The authority chose to use its compulsory purchase powers last year to allow Canary Wharf Group to snap up the last pockets of land for its 2.5million sq ft Heron Quays West development.

HERON Quays West leaseholders may seek a judicial review over a Tower Hamlets Council decision to force them to sell up to Canary Wharf Group (CWG).

Long leaseholders Leeside International and Michael Hunt were angered by the council’s ruling to authorise the use of compulsory purchase powers on the site, which CWG has earmarked for a major three-tower office and retail scheme.

Leeside’s director Michael Gross indicated he would take the case to court after the council refused to reconsider its decision at an Overview and Scrutiny meeting on Tuesday night.

LANDOWNERS at Heron Quays West are to be handed a council order forcing them to sell up to Canary Wharf Group (CWG).

Tower Hamlets cabinet members have agreed to use the council’s compulsory purchase powers to force two major long leasehold owners to pass on their interest in the site to CWG.

The major estate landowner wants to build a three-tower office and retail building on the land, which will accommodate as many as 7,960 staff.

THE "EXEMPLARY" design for Heron Quays West has been green-lit by Tower Hamlets planners.

Officers praised the "world class" design of the three-tower building, which will replace the low-rise buildings currently on the west of the estate near the junction with Westferry Road.

The three-tower structure was unanimously approved by the council's Strategic Development committee last Thursday night (March 13).

The plan was drawn up by architects Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners last year.
