Closures of the Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels are now just weeks away following a decision to approve a £9million tender for their refurbishment.

At a meeting on Tuesday the council's cabinet gave the thumbs up for Dean & Dyball Limited to carry out the works, which will take about year.

Greenwich foot tunnel users are still waiting for details on when the river crossing will be out of action.

Greenwich Council revealed earlier in the year that the tunnel would need to undergo essential maintenance, but it has not yet confirmed the start date and duration of these works.

The underground will be closed later this year for up to ten months, a move which has infuriated residents already plagued with tube, bus and DLR disruption.

Just weeks away from the closure of a vital cross river link which will affect hundreds of cyclists, council officials and transport bosses are yet to find alternatives.

Greenwich Foot Tunnel, which links south of the Thames with the Isle of Dogs, is likely to close for renovation in the autumn for up to 10 months.

As summer nears, businesses on both sides of the Thames are listening out for the imminent stampede of customers.

In the back of their minds, they're also dreading a moment when that rush may slow to a trickle.
