Plans to regenerate Greenwich Market that sparked public protest have been given the go-ahead.

The market's owner, Greenwich Hospital, was last week granted approval by the Inspector for Communities and Local Government to build a boutique hotel and shops at the historic site.

Plans to revamp Greenwich Market have been thrown out by the council's planning committee.

Greenwich Hospital was keen to overhaul the 1950s market buildings on the centuries-old site to make way for 1,214 square metres of retail, offices and a 100-room boutique hotel, but the scheme was unanimously rejected last night.

A canopy roof and a 100-bed "boutique hotel" have been proposed as part of a facelift for Greenwich Market.

Hopkins Architects has submitted plans for Greenwich Hospital's regeneration of the historic market, which will be exhibited this weekend.
