A WHARFER struck it lucky in the West India Quay hole-in-one challenge this week.

Ian Hiege won £2,000 in the competition which sees golfers fire balls towards a temporary green in the middle of the marina.

Ian's shot hit the flag before dropping in to the hole to earn him the star prize.

One of the organisers, Ken Coetzee said: "He was ecstatic."

There's still a weekend of play left at the golf challenge, as it is finishing on Sunday.

It costs £5 for three shots and 10 per cent of the fee goes to the male cancer charity, Orchid.

The competition has been running for two weeks. Pictured right is a golfer.

THERE was no “holding back the tees” when The O2 hosted a golf event with a difference this week.

Top golfer Justin Rose was joined by Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall on top of the building on Monday morning to hit a few balls officially to launch the BMW PGA Championship.

Rose, Europe’s number one player, and Hucknall both hit their shots off a specially built tee on The O2 roof, 50 metres above the River Thames. For Rose it was a departure from the normal surfaces he enjoys at places like St Andrews and Augusta.

THE GOLF Show delievered its usual mix of fun, fashion and big names when it rolled into Docklands.

The annual golfing extravaganza at ExCeL London last weekend always attracts big crowds and this year was no exception with thousands heading to the Royal Docks venue.

A sprinkling of celebrities added to the fun with two Ronnies – diminutive comedian Ronnie Corbett and former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson – both at the show.

LEE WESTWOOD had fans flocking to the Golf Show and the Ryder Cup star hopes 2008 will bring him a long-awaited first major title.

53May01Westwood.jpg Westwood, 35, has been one of Europe’s top golfers for more than a decade but has yet to claim one of the game’s majors. His best finish was fourth at The Open in 2004, and it’s a tournament he’s determined to win.

“The Open is the most prestigious and important to any British player, with it being the only major held outside the States. Everybody wants to win the claret jug,” he said.

This week’s sporting action focuses on the US Masters golf, which starts at the Augusta National Club today (April 10).

Punters are asking if anybody can stop Tiger Woods and can you honestly back him at odds of 5/4
to win? Tiger, bidding for his fifth Masters title, goes into the competition as the shortest priced favourite in Masters’ history and is without doubt at the top of his game.

THE FULL Monty hit Canary Wharf and he revealed he’s ready to head off on his own “Tiger hunt”.

Colin Montgomerie chatted to The Wharf about his ambitions for 2008, including trying to topple the world’s best player, Tiger Woods. Currently just outside the world’s top 50, ‘Monty’ hopes to qualify for the US Masters in Augusta next month.

Should he make it he will have to beat Woods to claim the coveted green jacket. Monty feels the American is the hardest player to compete with on the circuit.
