The two proposals, a new vehicle ferry crossing at Gallions Reach and a new road tunnel at Silvertown, could be open by 2017 and 2021 respectively if funding is found and planning permission is granted.

Mayor Of London Boris Johnson has said that the new tunnel for road traffic under the Thames in east London will be built within the next 10 years.

He will outline the timescale and capacity for a link between Greenwich peninsula and Silvertown at a dinner in the City this evening.

Gallions Reach bus rejected

Transport officials have said there would be no new bus route to Gallions Reach despite ongoing pressure from East London residents.

A letter by Transport for London said the group could not push forward with a link between the shopping centre and North Woolwich as "no cost effective scheme" could be found.

Gallions Reach shopping centre in Beckton is also shutting down after rumours that it would be targeted by looters later this evening.

Newham mayor Sir Robin Wales says he is ready to sidestep central government to build a bridge across the Thames at Gallions Reach.

The bridge has been on and off the agenda for years with the current lack of money likely to set back any project for years.

London Mayor Boris Johnson may be considering installing a river crossing at the site of the proposed Thames Gateway Bridge after all.

The mayor dumped long-mooted plans for the bridge between Beckton and Thamesmead a year ago, and re-stated his position last month that it would "bring unacceptable impact in terms of traffic, congestion and pollution to the area".
